Sites are increasingly considering abandoning Google as AI-generated search answers consume traffic that once flowed to their pages. Reddit plans to reassess its data-sharing agreement with Google, which currently allows Gemini to access the platform's content, while major outlets like Reuters are exploring paywalls as an alternative revenue stream.
The core dilemma is brutal: sites can block Google's crawlers to prevent their content from training AI systems, but doing so also removes them from traditional search results entirely. There's no middle ground. This catch-22 is forcing publishers to choose between feeding the AI machine that cannibalizes their traffic or disappearing from search altogether—and many are realizing neither option is acceptable.
