Verisign, the company managing critical internet infrastructure, is poised to launch the .web domain to the public after a decade-long dispute. The company announced that the domain has been delegated to the DNS root, clearing the path for public registrations later this year.
The conflict began in 2016 when another organization won an ICANN auction for the right to operate .web with a record bid at the time—funding secretly provided by Verisign. The arrangement sparked complaints and lawsuits that have now been resolved, finally allowing Verisign to take control of the highly valuable domain extension.
