Tesla's Cybercab Hits Austin Streets Without a Steering Wheel

Tesla has finally deployed its Cybercab to transport passengers in Austin, Texas—a vehicle built entirely as a robotaxi with no steering wheel, brake pedal, or accelerator. The launch was deliberately low-key compared to Tesla's typical splashy events, held as a closed invitation-only gathering rather than a public debut.

Hours after the launch, however, the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) opened an audit to examine how Tesla is certifying the vehicle under federal regulations. The core issue: the Cybercab lacks equipment traditionally required in cars, while Tesla argues some of those rules shouldn't apply to a vehicle never designed for human operation.

The Cybercab also exposes Tesla's technical bet on autonomous driving. Unlike competitors Waymo and Zoox—which rely on cameras, radar, and LiDAR sensors—Tesla leans heavily on cameras and neural networks to cut costs and scale its fleet faster. The operation still depends on human support, though: remote operators can intervene when the system encounters situations it can't solve, and can temporarily take control at low speeds. Tesla's launch ultimately tests not just its self-driving technology, but its ability to operate a robotaxi network at scale and how regulators should treat vehicles designed never to have a driver.
