In a historic shift, renewable energy has overtaken coal as the world's largest source of electricity for the first time. According to a recent report, renewable sources generated 5,072 TWh of electricity in the first half of 2025, compared to coal's 4,896 TWh.
This marks a significant increase from the previous year's performance, where renewables produced just 4,709 TWh in the same period. The global electricity demand rose by 2.6% in the first six months of 2025, equivalent to an additional 369 TWh. Notably, solar energy accounted for an impressive 83% of this increase.
These findings highlight a critical turning point in the energy sector, laying the groundwork for a more sustainable future.
