OpenAI is rolling out textGrain, a watermarking technology that embeds invisible statistical signals into the word choices of ChatGPT and Codex-generated text. The technology marks a response to EU regulations requiring that AI-generated content be identifiable by automated detection systems.
The watermarking feature is launching first in the European Union, where compliance with content identification laws is mandatory. API customers, however, already have global access to the feature on select models, though it remains disabled by default. This dual approach allows OpenAI to meet regional legal requirements while giving developers the flexibility to enable or disable the technology as needed.
