Mistral has released Mistral Large 4, internally codenamed Le Chonk, an open-source AI model with 1 trillion parameters. The model is available for download and on-premises installation, enabling private companies and government agencies to maintain full operational control and data sovereignty instead of relying on proprietary solutions from OpenAI and Anthropic.
According to Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch, the goal is to democratize AI as an institutional capability tool—delivering cutting-edge performance while consuming a fraction of the capital and computational power required by competing private labs.
The model claims performance comparable to the Chinese rival GLM-5.3 while requiring 47% fewer tokens per task. Mistral also claims top ranking among open-source systems for autonomous code generation on the Artificial Analysis benchmark. The weights are available publicly on Hugging Face and via API, giving organizations independent digital defense against supply chain disruptions and strengthening privacy and security for critical infrastructure in an era of growing concerns over data sovereignty.
