GitHub is planning to add 4 million CPU cores to its infrastructure as the platform battles service interruptions caused by surging demand for AI agents. The expansion also includes 160 petabytes of high-speed storage and additional computational capacity dedicated to GitHub Actions.
The scale of growth underscores how dramatically developer activity has shifted. In September alone, GitHub recorded 7.4 billion commits—five times the volume from the same month a year prior. This explosive growth reflects both increased adoption of AI-assisted development tools and the broader acceleration of software development workflows powered by agents and automation.
