Meta has patched a security vulnerability in its Ray-Ban smart glasses that allowed users to bypass the camera indicator LED and continue recording without others knowing. The front-facing LED is designed to alert nearby people when the camera is actively recording, but the flaw meant determined users could cover it after starting a recording session and keep filming undetected.
The glasses already had a safeguard that disabled the camera when the LED was covered—but only at the moment of activation. By starting a recording first and then covering the indicator light, users could circumvent this protection entirely. This gap raised privacy concerns for anyone near someone wearing the device, as they would have no way to know they were being recorded.
Meta's fix ensures that the camera cannot continue recording if the LED is obscured, closing the window that previously allowed this workaround. The update reinforces the company's attempt to balance the utility of wearable camera technology with the privacy expectations of people in public spaces.
