The hacker group ShinyHunters claims to have breached the FBI and stolen 3 TB of personal data belonging to employees, former employees, and job candidates. The compromised information includes names, home addresses, phone numbers, spouse names, and medical records.
Rather than demanding ransom, the group says its goal is to pressure the FBI into removing or editing an alert that it believes spreads misinformation about the hackers themselves. The breach was allegedly enabled by a zero-day vulnerability in Oracle PeopleSoft, the platform used for personnel management.
The FBI has not yet confirmed the breach but is investigating the incident, according to reporting from Ars Technica.
