GitHub is restructuring its storage infrastructure to cope with surging demand, primarily from AI agents. The company's current architecture, called Spokes, maintains complete repository copies on local disks and requires a minimum number of replicas to confirm each write operation. This approach is becoming a bottleneck as usage accelerates.
The new system will store each commit only once in Azure Blob Storage, delegating replication automatically to the cloud provider. This shift eliminates redundant local copies and streamlines the write confirmation process. The migration is designed to happen without downtime, though GitHub has not yet announced a target date.
The scale of the challenge is evident in the numbers: between September 2025 and August 2026, platform traffic surged approximately 117%. This explosive growth underscores why GitHub needs a more scalable storage strategy to sustain its platform as AI workloads continue to intensify.
