Brazil's New Phone Call Authentication Rule Aims to Stop Fraud

The Brazilian government has published a provisional measure requiring telecom operators to authenticate calls originating from their networks and verify caller identification before completing incoming calls to customers. Calls without identification will be automatically blocked, and legitimately registered numbers can also be barred if used abusively.

The rule targets a common fraud scheme where criminals spoof generic numbers to impersonate financial institutions and trick victims into making unauthorized payments. By enforcing caller authentication and blocking unidentified calls, the measure makes it harder for scammers to successfully execute these attacks. Numbers that show signs of abuse can be suspended, adding another layer of protection.
