All new cars sold in the European Union must now include an infrared camera pointed at the driver's face. The Advanced Driver Distraction Warning system uses this camera to monitor where the driver is looking, automatically activating above 20 km/h and issuing alerts when it detects inattention.
The regulation aims to reduce accidents caused by driver distraction. However, early testing suggests the system may be overly sensitive, triggering alerts when drivers glance at scenery or look toward the vehicle's infotainment display—situations that aren't inherently dangerous and can frustrate users with false warnings.
