Anthropic announced a new hardware interface standard that enables AI models to control physical laboratory equipment—microscopes, cameras, lasers, and robotic arms—without requiring model-specific training for each device. The Model Hardware Standard (MHS) creates a common layer of communication, letting the same AI system operate different hardware setups by understanding the unified interface rather than learning device-by-device configurations.
The standard is designed to accelerate scientific experimentation by reducing friction in hardware integration. AWS, Hugging Face, and Raspberry Pi are already testing MHS, signaling early industry adoption. Anthropic plans to open-source the standard and allow third-party AI systems to use it, making the approach accessible beyond their own models and creating a broader ecosystem for AI-driven lab automation.
