Anthropic Moves to Pay-As-You-Go Model for OpenClaw and Third-Party Tools

Anthropic has updated its subscription policy, ending token support for OpenClaw and other third-party harnesses within the Claude Pro and Max plans. As of April 4, users can no longer utilize their monthly token allowance for these external tools.

New Usage Limits and Costs

The company is transitioning these services to a pay-as-you-go model. This shift aims to preserve computing capacity for native products like Claude Code and Cowork. Anthropic cited high demand and data center constraints as reasons for the change, noting that current subscription models were not designed for the heavy load generated by external agents.

Relief Measures and Deadlines

  • Credits: Users can claim a usage credit equal to their monthly fee until April 17, valid for 90 days.
  • Refunds: Subscribers dissatisfied with the change are eligible for a full refund upon cancellation.
  • API Access: Standard API usage remains unaffected by these specific subscription changes.

While OpenClaw is the first to be restricted, Anthropic plans to extend these limitations to all external tools soon to ensure platform stability.
