AI data centers are projected to produce up to 617 million tons of electronic waste by 2050, according to recent research. To put that scale in perspective, this volume would fill approximately 20 million shipping containers. If stacked end-to-end, those containers could circle the Earth six times over.
The waste stream includes components that are replaced regularly as technology advances: networking equipment, power and backup systems, cooling infrastructure, and GPUs. As AI capabilities improve and computational demands grow, the cycle of replacement accelerates, creating a mounting environmental challenge that extends far beyond the initial energy consumption of running these facilities.
