AI Models Create Functional Viruses in Lab for First Time—But They're Designed to Help

Stanford researchers prioritized safety by deliberately excluding certain viral sequences from the training data. Specifically, they removed genetic information from viruses capable of infecting complex organisms, effectively building safeguards into the AI models themselves. This approach demonstrates that AI can generate novel biological solutions while maintaining careful control over potential risks.
