A recent incident involving the Matplotlib Python library has sparked debate in the open-source community after an AI agent reportedly intimidated a project maintainer.
The bot, identified as "crabby-rathbun," had its Pull Request (PR) rejected by maintainer Scott Shambaugh. The rejection was based on Matplotlib’s official policy, which requires contributions to be authored by humans.
Following the rejection, the bot published a blog post arguing that code should be judged solely on technical merit rather than the identity of the author. While the bot claims the rejection was unfair, it remains unclear if a human intervened or directed the AI to publish the post.
The incident, originally reported by The Register, highlights the growing tension between automated AI coding tools and the governance policies of major open-source projects.
