Researchers used artificial intelligence to analyze over 3,000 dream reports and discovered that dreams are neither random mental noise nor faithful reproductions of daily life. Instead, they are new situations formed by combining memories, emotions, familiar places, and imagined possibilities.

The study examined reports from 287 adults and cross-referenced them with data on personality, sleep quality, cognitive abilities, and psychological traits. The findings show that everyday settings—workplaces, hospitals, classrooms—often appear mixed with unrelated or unfamiliar locations, creating the surreal combinations people commonly experience during sleep.

This research suggests the brain doesn't simply replay the day; it actively reconstructs reality by weaving together disparate elements of experience and imagination into novel scenarios.
