YouTube is turning back the clock with an exciting new feature that uses Artificial Intelligence to enhance the resolution of old, low-quality videos. As the platform celebrates its 20th anniversary, it looks to revive content that lags behind in today’s 4K-dominated market. Initially, YouTube's AI upscaling feature is available on smart TVs and streaming devices like Roku, enhancing videos up to 1080p. Future updates aim for 4K on all devices.
Importantly, this is an additional option, not a replacement of existing content. Videos processed with AI upscaling will be labeled as "Super Resolution," but users can still choose to watch the original version. Content creators have control, as they can enable or disable this feature in their channel settings under Configuration | Advanced Settings. Meanwhile, viewers can select their preferred video quality on a case-by-case basis, as they've always done.
