Windows has dropped below 60% market share for the first time, according to StatCounter data from June. The operating system now holds 56.5% of global usage, marking a significant decline from its historical dominance.
The breakdown of remaining market share shows macOS at 16.4%, Linux at 4.4%, and Chrome OS at 1.2%. An additional 21.5% of traffic comes from unidentified systems—primarily web requests made by bots and applications using User-Agent strings that don't specify an operating system.
This shift reflects broader changes in how people access technology. The rise of mobile devices, cloud computing, and alternative operating systems has eroded Windows' once-commanding lead. While still the dominant desktop OS, Windows' decline below the 60% threshold signals that the personal computer market is fragmenting and diversifying.
