Microsoft is introducing the Windows Age API to Windows 11, allowing applications to identify whether a user is a child, teenager, or adult without revealing their exact age. The API returns broad age categories: under 10, 10–12, 13–15, 16–17, or 18 and older.
Developers can use this information to automatically adapt features and safety protections based on age group. A younger user might see stricter content filters or limited functionality, while older users get full access. This approach balances privacy—since exact birth dates aren't exposed—with the ability to enforce age-appropriate safeguards.
The feature is currently available to Windows Insider participants, meaning it's in early testing before a wider rollout. This signals Microsoft's push to give developers better tools for compliance with child safety regulations and for creating genuinely protective experiences for younger users.
