Despite billions of dollars flowing into Artificial Intelligence, Goldman Sachs reports that these investments have had "basically zero" impact on the United States' GDP in 2025.
The Import Gap
While American tech giants like Meta, Amazon, Google, and OpenAI are spending heavily on AI infrastructure, the economic benefits are leaking offshore. Most of the critical hardware—specifically high-end chips and server equipment—is manufactured abroad.
As a result, these massive capital expenditures are contributing more to the GDP of manufacturing hubs like Taiwan and South Korea than to the domestic US economy.
Future Projections
The scale of investment continues to climb. Estimates suggest that by 2026, leading tech companies will spend approximately $700 billion on data centers. However, until more of the supply chain shifts to domestic production, the direct impact on US economic growth figures may remain minimal.
