What's Changing
Starting now, Meta AI will be the only AI assistant of its kind allowed on WhatsApp. However, this restriction comes with an important exception: businesses using AI for customer service will not be affected by the ban.
Why the Ban?
According to Meta, the company's explanation is straightforward:
- WhatsApp's Business API was designed specifically to facilitate communication between businesses and consumers
- The distribution of chatbots generated an unexpectedly high volume of messages
- This surge required technical support beyond what was originally planned
