Vietnam Limits Non-Skippable Ads to 5 Seconds

Vietnam is introducing strict new regulations on digital advertising, mandating that all non-skippable video and image ads must not exceed 5 seconds.

According to reports from Dexerto, the decree aims to improve user experience across major platforms, including YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and Twitch. The regulation also prohibits websites from forcing users to wait before closing static image ads.

Key components of the decree:

  • 5-Second Limit: Non-skippable ads must allow users to bypass them after 5 seconds.
  • Instant Close: Static ads can no longer have a "wait time" before the close button becomes active.
  • Platform Impact: Major social media and streaming services must comply with these duration limits within the country.

While the move is a win for viewers, industry experts speculate it could have unintended consequences. Specifically, platforms like YouTube may increase the total frequency of ads to compensate for the reduction in individual ad length.
