A boy in the United Kingdom developed toasted skin syndrome after placing his laptop directly on his abdomen for up to 8 hours daily while homeschooling. The condition, caused by repeated and prolonged exposure to low-intensity heat, produces a lacy, net-like rash that resembles burned skin.
Toasted skin syndrome is generally benign and reversible once the heat source is removed. The boy recovered after several months of careful management by avoiding direct contact between the laptop and his skin. For students and remote workers who use laptops extensively, placing the device on a desk or lap desk rather than directly against the body can prevent this condition from developing in the first place.
