In a world increasingly driven by technology, e-waste has become a growing concern. But a group of researchers is exploring a creative and sustainable solution: transforming old smartphones into small-scale data centers.
Instead of letting outdated devices pile up in drawers or end up in landfills, the team built a working prototype using four old smartphones mounted on a 3D-printed frame. To ensure safe and stable performance, the devices had their batteries removed and were powered by an external energy source.
One of the most impressive tests involved submerging the entire system underwater to assist with the real-time identification of aquatic species. This allowed researchers to process data on the spot, removing the need to record and analyze footage later on land.
