A massive data center project proposed for Utah, known as Stratos, is projected to release thermal energy equivalent to 23 atomic bombs every single day. While the comparison differs in delivery—a bomb releases energy instantaneously whereas a data center disperses it over 24 hours—the environmental footprint is staggering. Experts warn that the facility could raise local daytime temperatures by up to 3°C and nighttime temperatures by 6°C, potentially triggering unpredictable ecological shifts in the surrounding region.
The sheer scale of the infrastructure required for Stratos is unprecedented in the tech industry. The project is expected to cost $300 billion and demands 9 GW of power, a load equivalent to the average consumption of three cities the size of São Paulo. This extreme energy density highlights the growing conflict between massive AI infrastructure needs and local environmental stability.
