Stack Overflow Sees Dramatic Decline in User Activity

Recent data reveals a sharp downturn for Stack Overflow, the long-standing Q&A hub for developers. According to reports from DevClass and Slashdot, monthly questions plummeted by approximately 82.7% over the course of 2024, dropping from 22,394 in January to just 3,862 in December.

For context, the platform recorded nearly 200,000 monthly questions during its peak in 2014.

Why is engagement dropping?

Two primary factors are driving this decline:

  • The Rise of AI: Many developers are now turning to AI tools like ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot for instant coding assistance rather than waiting for community responses.
  • Platform Culture: Some users point to a "harsh" community environment. Frequent criticism of "duplicate" or "low-quality" questions has discouraged newer developers from participating.

While Stack Overflow remains a massive repository of coding knowledge, these trends highlight a significant shift in how developers seek help.
