SK Hynix, the world's leading supplier of high-bandwidth memory for AI data centers, is embarking on a massive expansion project to triple its production capacity by 2034. The South Korean chipmaker is currently developing a new mega-site featuring four additional wafer fabs to meet the explosive demand for artificial intelligence hardware. While construction is moving forward, the first phase of this expansion is not expected to be operational until 2027.
Despite the significant increase in supply, typical consumers should not expect memory prices to drop in the near future. The expansion is strategically focused on high-margin HBM (High Bandwidth Memory), which is critical for Large Language Models and enterprise-scale AI infrastructure. The long lead time for these facilities means that market pressure on existing inventory will remain high for several years as the industry races to keep up with server-side requirements.
