Shopify has acquired Tailwind Labs, the team behind the popular Tailwind CSS framework. The move ensures continuity for one of the web development world's most widely used utility-first CSS frameworks while bringing its creators into Shopify's growing developer platform.
Tailwind CSS will remain open source under the MIT license, preserving the framework's accessibility to the entire developer community. Existing customers can continue accessing products like Tailwind Plus and ui.sh, though Shopify has announced that new signups for these paid offerings will be discontinued. The acquisition price was not disclosed.
This acquisition reflects Shopify's broader investment in developer tools and infrastructure. By bringing Tailwind Labs in-house, Shopify gains control over a foundational technology used across thousands of web projects while committing to keeping the core framework available to all developers.
