Seagate Breakthrough: 6.9 TB Per Platter in HDDs

Seagate has achieved a remarkable milestone in data storage with the successful testing of 6.9 TB per platter in hard disk drives (HDDs). This advancement sets the stage for the development of HDDs ranging from 55 TB to 69 TB capacity. This is a significant leap compared to their recent HAMR HDD models, which use 10 platters of 3 TB each to achieve a 30 TB capacity.

Despite this breakthrough, Seagate anticipates that this cutting-edge technology will not hit the market until after 2030. Furthermore, the company is planning even larger capacity platters, such as 7 TB and 15 TB, starting around 2031.

As per the report from Tom's Hardware, this evolution in storage technology holds tremendous promise for the future of data storage solutions.
