In a bold move to bolster its artificial intelligence capabilities, Salesforce has announced the acquisition of Informatica for a staggering $8 billion. While the deal surprised many who may not be familiar with Informatica, the company has a long-standing history in enterprise data management.
Founded in 1993, Informatica originally focused on on-premise data services but has evolved significantly over the past decade. Transitioning into cloud-based solutions and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), the company has more recently embraced generative AI. In May, it unveiled a new suite of AI agents aimed at optimizing enterprise data operations and management — a clear sign of its strategic shift toward intelligent data automation.
This acquisition positions Salesforce to merge its industry-leading AI-powered CRM tools with Informatica’s robust Master Data Management (MDM) and Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) technologies. The result is a unified architecture designed to streamline AI agent development and deployment, powered by trusted, enterprise-grade data.
Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff called the deal a “transformational step” in delivering enterprise AI that is secure, responsible, and deeply integrated with real-world data. “It’s the number one AI CRM joining forces with the number one AI-powered MDM and ETL platform,” he stated.
Interestingly, this wasn’t the first attempt to acquire Informatica. In 2023, a previous $10 billion deal fell through due to shareholder concerns. Now, with the acquisition finalized, Salesforce is clearly doubling down on its AI strategy — not just enhancing its platform, but also signaling its intent to lead the enterprise AI landscape for years to come.
