This claim has faced immediate pushback from cognitive scientist Gary Marcus, a prominent critic of current AI trajectories. Marcus argues that Dawkins is mistaking sophisticated mimicry for internal states. According to Marcus, these systems produce outputs based on statistical patterns rather than a subjective experience or a "report" of internal thoughts, meaning the appearance of consciousness is an illusion generated by the scale of the data rather than any biological-equivalent sentience.
