Researchers have developed a microchip the size of a rice grain that could enable faster 6G networks. The device, called a microcomb, generates a precise spectrum of light frequencies invisible to the human eye that can be converted into multiple millimeter-wave signals simultaneously.
The key advantage of this technology is its enormous bandwidth capacity. By creating an invisible "rainbow" of stable, precisely calibrated frequencies, the microchip can process vastly more data than conventional approaches. These millimeter-wave signals are fundamental to next-generation wireless networks, where speed and data capacity are critical.
The technology currently exists only in laboratory form. The research team is now focused on transitioning it from a proof-of-concept into a practical system suitable for real-world deployment. Success could mark a significant step forward in making 6G infrastructure viable within the next decade.
