Qualcomm has unveiled its new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 processor line, enabling smartphones to run AI models directly on device rather than relying on cloud processing. The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 can execute smaller models with up to 200 million parameters, suitable for tasks like audio transcription and task automation. The more powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 pushes capabilities further, supporting models with up to 30 billion parameters using a Mixture of Experts architecture—a technique that activates only the necessary parameters for each specific task, improving efficiency.
This shift toward on-device AI processing eliminates latency and dependency on internet connectivity for AI features, while keeping user data local. The Motorola Signature 27 is among the first devices to receive these chips, signaling a broader move toward mainstream AI smartphones.
