A recent report from 9to5Mac has raised serious privacy concerns regarding Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses. According to the report, sensitive video footage captured by the devices is allegedly being sent to third-party contractors in Kenya for manual review.
Key Privacy Risks
The footage under review may contain highly personal information, including:
- Financial data: Bank details or credit card information visible to the camera.
- Intimate moments: Private interactions captured within the home.
How Data is Shared
The smart glasses capture video either through manual activation or when a user queries the built-in AI about their surroundings. While using the AI feature explicitly sends data to Meta’s servers for processing, it remains unclear if manually recorded videos are also being uploaded for human analysis.
Meta’s Response
As of now, Meta has not officially commented on these allegations or clarified the extent of their human-led data moderation practices for the Ray-Ban smart glasses.
