OpenAI may soon expand its cloud footprint beyond Microsoft. According to a report by Ars Technica, the AI research company has reached an agreement to use Google Cloud for training and running its models.
Sources familiar with the matter claim the deal had previously been postponed due to OpenAI’s exclusive partnership with Microsoft — a relationship that reportedly ended in January 2025. With that exclusivity now behind it, OpenAI is free to explore additional infrastructure options, including Google’s powerful AI-optimized data centers.
The move is particularly noteworthy given the competitive landscape. Google’s DeepMind division is a direct rival to OpenAI in the development of cutting-edge artificial intelligence. This collaboration, if confirmed, underscores the growing complexity and interdependence within the AI ecosystem — where technological needs may outweigh rivalries.
