A deep rift has formed between OpenAI and Apple as OpenAI considers legal action over a failed promise of revenue. Despite expecting billions in new subscriptions from the iPhone partnership, OpenAI claims Apple effectively buried the ChatGPT integration, making features difficult for iOS users to discover. The friction isn't one-sided: Apple has raised alarms over privacy control issues within OpenAI's systems.
The tension is further complicated by OpenAI’s shift into physical products. Apple is reportedly wary of OpenAI's hardware initiatives, which are currently being led by former high-level Apple executives. While the partnership was intended to redefine mobile AI, it has instead devolved into a conflict over visibility, user privacy, and direct market competition.
