OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta Race for New Domain Extensions in ICANN's First Expansion Since 2012

OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta are competing for new top-level domains (TLDs) after ICANN, the organization coordinating global internet domain names, opened applications for fresh requests. The generic extensions being sought include .agent, .agi, .intelligence, and .superintelligence—reflecting the companies' focus on AI capabilities.

Brand-specific domains in the running include .facebook, .instagram, and .threads from Meta, alongside .chatgpt, .codex, .openai, and .gpt from OpenAI, and .anthropic and .claude from Anthropic. In total, ICANN received 1,615 applications from 481 candidates. This marks the first expansion round since 2012, when the domain system last opened for new TLDs. However, none of these new extensions will be officially launched before 2027, as applications are only the first step in a lengthy approval process.
