Microsoft is taking a major step toward streamlining software maintenance for Windows users. The company announced that developers will soon be able to deliver updates to their applications directly through Windows Update — the same channel used for official system updates.
This initiative will support applications packaged in the MSIX and APPX formats, as well as certain customized Win32 programs. In addition to simplifying the update process, this move allows third-party apps to be more deeply integrated into Windows. For instance, users will be able to see update logs and receive notifications for app updates right within the familiar system interface.
Developers interested in testing the feature can currently sign up for a private preview. However, Microsoft has not yet announced when the capability will be rolled out to the general public.
The new functionality aims to enhance security, user experience, and consistency across Windows devices by centralizing updates in a trusted and familiar system. According to The Verge, this could mark a significant change in how independent software vendors maintain and deliver updates to their users.
