Microsoft is transforming Windows 11 into an AI-powered operating system through massive integration with its Copilot AI tool.
The Vision: AI-First OS
Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft's Executive VP and Consumer Chief Marketing Officer, outlined the ambitious goal: "We're rewriting the entire operating system around AI and essentially building what will become the true AI PC."
How It Works
The system now responds to voice commands and executes tasks independently:
- Voice activation: Simply say "Hey, Copilot!"
- Screen scanning: AI analyzes what's displayed on your screen
- File access: Opens documents and applications automatically
- Smart automation: Performs complex tasks through simple prompts
Real-World Example
In Microsoft's demonstration, Copilot:
- Sorted large photo collections
- Adjusted image orientation
- Removed duplicates
All from a single voice command.
Current Status
These AI features are currently optional, but Microsoft is preparing a major marketing campaign to promote voice-controlled computing. According to Mehdi: "All the data we see shows that when people use voice, they love it."
This shift comes as Microsoft officially phases out Windows 10, signaling a new era of AI-integrated computing.
