Microsoft has announced Project Zenith, a new version of Windows designed specifically for developers. The system comes pre-configured with essential development tools including VS Code, GitHub Copilot, WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux), WinAppCLI, and PowerToys.
Beyond pre-installed tools, Project Zenith reduces developer distractions by disabling certain notifications and streamlining the operating system for productivity. This focused approach suggests Microsoft is taking developer experience seriously, bundling the most commonly used tools for coding and development workflows.
The catch: Project Zenith requires significant hardware resources. It's only available for devices with at least 64 GB of unified memory and 250 GB/s or more of memory bandwidth. This high specification requirement means the system targets high-end machines and workstations rather than mainstream PCs, positioning it as a specialized offering for professional developers with premium hardware.
