Microsoft has officially adopted the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a new interoperability standard for artificial intelligence agents developed by Anthropic. The company also announced that it has joined the MCP Steering Committee, the governing body that guides the protocol’s evolution and adoption across the industry.
This move marks a significant step toward a more standardized ecosystem for AI communication. Microsoft plans to implement the MCP standard across a wide range of products, including GitHub, Copilot Studio, Dynamics 365, Azure, Azure AI, and most notably, Windows 11.
In the coming months, Windows 11 will receive integrated MCP servers, allowing AI agents to access critical system resources such as the file system, window management tools, and other internal capabilities. This update will also enable developers to build custom integrations for their applications using the MCP infrastructure within Windows 11.
