Meta announced its first transatlantic submarine internet cable, called Petal, which will connect France and the United States across approximately 7,000 kilometers. The cable is expected to become operational in 2029 and will deliver a capacity of 1 petabit per second—double the bandwidth of today's most advanced submarine cables, which currently reach 500 terabits per second.
To put this capacity in perspective, the bandwidth would be sufficient for roughly 75% of the world's population to stream music simultaneously. This represents a significant leap in transoceanic internet infrastructure, enabling faster data transfer and improved connectivity between two major tech and business hubs.
