A key claim in their position: relying exclusively on closed models offers no inherent security advantage. Open-weight systems and proprietary ones alike can face breaches, misuse, and vulnerabilities. The signatories contend that restricting open-weight models doesn't solve security challenges—it only limits options for developers and researchers.
Notably absent from the letter is Anthropic, the only major AI company that has not yet signed the appeal.
