Developers are working to bring a "Modern Standby" feature to the Linux kernel, similar to the functionality found in Windows.
Proposed by developer Antheas Kapenekakis and reported by Phoronix, this mode offers a middle ground between full operation and traditional sleep. Unlike standard suspension, Modern Standby allows a device to stay low-power while keeping various background processes active.
Key Benefits of Modern Standby:
- Instant Resume: Wake your device almost instantly.
- Stay Connected: Maintain network connections and receive real-time notifications.
- Background Tasks: Continue playing music or performing minor tasks while the screen is off.
- Power Efficiency: Reduces energy consumption without fully cutting off system activity.
The project is currently in its early stages and has been submitted for community review. If adopted, it could significantly improve the user experience for Linux laptops and handheld devices.
