Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux, experimented with vibe coding in his personal open-source project, AudioNoise. This repo focuses on digital audio effects for guitar pedals.
During a vacation, Torvalds used Google Antigravity, an AI tool, to build a Python-based audio sample visualizer. Instead of manual coding, he described the desired behavior in natural language. In the project's README, he noted his limited familiarity with Python libraries and APIs, letting AI generate the code.
The rest of AudioNoise is written in C, Torvalds' preferred language. He licenses the experimental repo under GPLv2.
Torvalds skipped traditional steps like hunting online examples. He went straight to AI for faster prototyping.
At Open Source Summit Korea 2025, Torvalds shared his views on vibe coding and AI in programming. He called it risky for product maintenance but valuable for onboarding new developers and boosting engagement. Optimistic about AI tools, he flagged issues like infrastructure strain and fake bug reports. He predicts AI will normalize, shedding hype.
