Linus Torvalds says that AI has made massive kernel updates the new normal for Linux development. A significant portion of the fixes in the seventh release candidate (rc7) for Linux kernel version 7.2 were either created or improved with AI assistance, resulting in an exceptionally high volume of changes.
According to Torvalds, the majority of these AI-assisted updates consist of small refinements across drivers, filesystems, networking, and architecture code. The shift reflects how machine learning tools are now integrated into the development workflow, accelerating the pace of incremental improvements that keep the kernel stable and performant.
