iPhone's New Feature Proves Photos Are Authentic, Not AI-Generated

Reference Image, Apple's new authentication system, lets iPhone users prove their photos were actually captured by the camera and not generated by AI. The feature leverages unique hardware data from each device, making it virtually impossible to spoof or replicate.

The system requires manual activation. Users must enable the "Reference" option in the Camera app to generate the authentication proof for their images. This deliberate friction ensures the feature is used intentionally rather than automatically adding metadata to every photo.

The capability rolled out in iOS 27 beta 5, with the full release expected in September. As digital manipulation and AI-generated imagery become more convincing, Apple's move addresses growing concerns about image authenticity and trust in visual media.
