Meta has begun testing Instagram for TV, a new application dedicated to bringing vertical short-form videos to the big screen. Currently available for Amazon Fire TV users in the United States, the app reimagines the Reels experience for a lean-back, household environment.
Key Features of Instagram for TV
- Interest-Based Channels: Content is organized into categories like sports and music, with videos playing automatically with sound enabled.
- Multi-User Support: Up to five different accounts can log in on one device, ensuring personalized recommendations for every family member.
- Safety & Controls: To account for shared viewing, the app defaults to a PG-13 content rating. Additionally, screen time spent on the TV app counts toward your Instagram daily limits.
- Search Functionality: Users can search for specific creators and profiles directly through the TV interface.
Optimized Viewing Experience
Reels maintain their native vertical format, displayed in the center of the screen with captions and metrics cleverly placed in the sidebars. This design avoids stretching the content while maximizing the large-screen real estate.
Future Outlook
While currently limited to Amazon Fire TV in the US, Meta plans to expand to more devices and regions soon. Future updates may include using smartphones as remote controls and creating shared "family feeds."
